About the event

Paradoxically, the digital superstructure that allows data to circulate and thus fosters social activism and the  advocacy of causes such as sustainability, gender equality and freedom of expression, in all its forms, comes at an  enormous cost, in both energy and social terms. It contributes to the alienation of huge swathes of the  population, sexual harassment through the sharing of private images and videos, censorship, public judgement  and self-censorship, and the spread of fake news, with its consequences for Western democracies, which are  seeing a rise in populism and extremist movements.

Against this backdrop, the sense acquired through study and the repeated practice of artistic  appreciation is fundamental to society, since, as has been amply demonstrated, the invisible hand and laisser  faire philosophies have failed to produce satisfactory results. It is now more essential than ever to exercise  criticism, with due authority, to revisit the classical canons of wisdom and expertise, and to carefully evaluate a  work or a career. If not, we are simply propagating a state of affairs wherein dubious practices become  entrenched, while chaos and amorality reign supreme.

The third edition - Critic Condition - will host Sacha Craddock from AICA, as well as the former director of the Centre Pompidou Bernard Blistène and Recontemporary host Iole di Persano. It will focus on the significance of today’s tastemakers, and the ripple effect they produce across the Arts ecosystem. This includes reflecting on Western society’s tendency to grant celebrities, including online influencers, automatic intellectual legitimacy.
